Service project benefits city park - 06/15/2018

Nearly 30 members of the Poway Kiwanis Family combined efforts Saturday morning to use up 6 gallons of stain on fencing around the Train Barn at Old Poway Park.  A service project expected to take 4-5 hours to complete was accomplished in 2!

We had a dozen club members helping. They were joined by students from the Cal State Marcos Circle K Club, Poway High Key Club and the Abraxas Aktion Club. Hard workers, all!

Joining our club Thursday night were Sue Herndon and Brian Pepin.
Sue moved to Poway in 1977 and raised her triplets (two daughters and a son) here. She did the PTA and Chamber of
Commerce things and remains active with the Toby WellsFo undation. She is a co-founder of Jack-o-Smash and also
belongs to the Sunrise Rotary Club in RB.
Brian and hi s family (wife and two little ones) moved to Poway a year ago. Raised in San  Diego( SDSU grad) he runs the Lincoln Club of San Diego and does political consulting on the side. Hesaid he asked around town about joining a service club and was told Poway Kiwanis was hisbest choice!
 


Honors for five club members - 05/07/2018

Five members of the Poway Kiwanis Club received Distinguished Service Awards from the California-Nevada-Hawaii District Foundation during a dinner held Saturday in Lakeside. Honored were Poway Kiwanis Foundation Treasurer Marty Harris, Past Club President and current Division 37 Secretary Joyce Handa, Past Club President Mike Szoka, Club Treasurer Thelma Fisher and Past Club President Cal Pancheri. The Lakeside dinner was the official San Diego area visit of District Gov. Joni Ackerman.


Club hosts Kids Safety Fair - 05/01/2018

The Poway Kiwanis Club hosted its third annual Kids Safety Fair on April 28 in Community Park.

Youngsters had their bicycles checked by volunteers from Poway Bicycle, learned about fire safety in a Poway Fire Department trailer and received other related safety tips at various information booths. Two youngsters won new bicycles in a drawing and everyone received a free t-shirt.

Photo shows member Rob French fitting a child with a free bicycle helmet. Child safety is one of the club’s main focuses.  


Club again sponsors Miss Poway pageant - 03/28/2018

The March 24 Miss Poway Pageant, sponsored by the Poway Kiwanis Club, had 37 young women compete for three titles. The event draw a large crowd to the Poway Center for the Performing Arts and served as a fundraiser for the club’s foundation. Congratulations to the three winners: Miss Junior Teen Poway Devyn Jones, Miss Poway Gabriella Sheffler and Miss Teen Poway Tessa Tricarico.


Someone will be murdered on April 7! - 03/14/2018

The Poway Kiwanis Club Foundation is hosting a Murder Mystery Dinner at 6 p.m. Saturday, April 7 at St. Gabriel’s Catholic Church in Poway. The event, open to the public, is a major fundraiser for the club’s high schools scholarship program.

Ten pre-appointed “CEOs” will be on hand to see which receives a big award. One of them (or perhaps someone else in the room) will end up dead. It will be up to those attending to figure out “who done it.”

Dinner will be prepared and served by the Knights of Columbus, which is also offering a dinner for 10, in your home, as the evening’s only live auction prize.

Youngsters shop with a 'hero' - 12/29/2017

Sixty underserved youngsters from a local elementary school got to shop for holiday gifts with a Marine or public safety first-responded on Dec. 14 during the 11th annual "Holiday With Heroes" event sponsored by the Poway Kiwanis Club and The Summit for Children Worldwide.

Each child received a $100 gift card to shop for family members. Each child also received a no-sew fleece blanket assembled by the Poway High Key Club, a book distributed by the Abraxas Aktion Club, a hand-knitted cap and a free hot dog dinner.

Club member Mike Szoka raised about $7,500 in private donations to help fund the event.


Poway Kiwanis Decorates Ronald McDonald House - 12/11/2017

Poway Kiwanis Club members got into the holiday spirit with a new service project, helping decorate the Ronald McDonald House North near Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego. Members and guests spent the morning adding holiday decorations to both the interior and exterior of the house, which now serves as a companion facility to the larger Ronald McDonald House.

The club agreed to participate after accepting a request for assistance from the Los Rancheros Kiwanis Club. Poway Past President Liz Carlson chaired the activity.

Members will return after the holidays to take down the decorations.


Transfers Join Club - 11/21/2017

Two experienced Kiwanians have transferred to the Poway Kiwanis Club.

The two are Tim Cunning, left, former Region 2 district trustee and candidate for the position of district governor-elect, and Jaime “Jim” Hernandez, a past distinguished president of the Los Ranchos Kiwanis Club.
